FAQs

Who is Intecells?

Intecells is a start-up battery cell technology company founded in 2018 by a highly focused and dedicated team with decades of automotive industry and materials science R&D experience.

Our aim is a fundamental change in electrode production to make it more efficient, less energy-intensive, less polluting, and less capital-intensive. The core of Intecells’ IP is a patented, proprietary, low energy, atmospheric plasma technology that is both form factor- and cell chemistry-agnostic.

Where is Intecells located?

Intecells is proudly based in Michigan, Detroit – the heartland of the US automotive industry. This location places us in close proximity to leading OEMs and Tier One suppliers, ensuring that we can form strong partnerships with our customers.

Why is a step-change in battery manufacturing needed?

Existing methods for making electrodes are decades old and have only seen incremental improvements since their inception. A completely new approach is needed: Intecells’ plasma technology platform – ICPLAS – will allow battery cell suppliers to successfully compete with the established companies that currently dominate the industry worldwide.

Making better batteries is a pre-requisite for achieving net zero by 2050. Continuing with an evolutionary approach will not be successful. Intecells has the technology, expertise, and experience to revolutionise the cost structure and environmental footprint of battery manufacturing, together with a deep understanding of what customers in every sector need. A more sustainable future is already taking shape today.

What sets Intecells apart from other start-up battery technology companies?

Intecells’ strategic three-phase roadmap to revolutionising the battery industry is revenue-focused, delivering a source of inward investment to enable the creation of the products and solutions that industry needs today, while working toward the ultimate goal of affordable mass-produced solid-state batteries. This pragmatic, customer-focused business model is a clear differentiator from other start-ups looking to disrupt the battery industry.

You say you have a three-phase approach to commercialization: what are they?

In the first phase, Intecell’s ICPLAS plasma technology platform – which is already available – solves the current production bottlenecks in cell manufacturing imposed by filling cells with electrolyte. The plasma alters the electrodes’ surface properties to accelerate absorption, reducing process time by 70% and cutting carbon emissions by up to 65%. Treating separators as well increases cycle life and C-rates.

In phase two, it enables solvent- and binder-free dry coating, eliminating toxic chemicals and reducing costs by at least 60 percent. Electrodes made using this process are available for customer evaluation today, ahead of pilot demos scheduled for 2026.

In phase three, it will deliver efficient, scalable, pollution-free solid-state battery manufacturing through AI-driven micro-plants producing electrodes on demand.

Are your technologies patented?

Yes. Intecells’ ICPLAS technology platform is protected by 15 patents already granted, a further 10 that are pending.

Which sectors are you targeting?

Intecells’ ICPLAS plasma technology platform will transform the development of electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, consumer electronics, wearables, and medical devices: instead of products being engineered around the batteries, this paradigm will be reversed, enabling a step-change in design freedom.
